This 1952 musical was directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen. in the Rain', directed by Stanley Donen and Kelly. American dancer and actor Gene Kelly as Don Lockwood and Debbie Reynolds as Kathy Seldon in 'Singin'. And as Reynard’s stories spread, so did his characterisation. In Romeo and Juliet, the character Tybalt is referred to as the ‘Prince of Cats’ in homage to the Reynardian adversary, a subtle reference which gives you some idea of the popularity and staying power these stories had. A cunning fox called Russell appears in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. He became so ubiquitous that the French name for a male fox changed from goupil to renard, which it remains to this day, and reynard is still an English name for a male fox in some parts of Britain. And he was hugely popular: as his many names imply, Reynard went on to be translated into many different languages and his story reimagined countless times. Reynard didn’t invent the idea of the fox as a cunning trickster (many of his stories have a basis in previous beast-literature, folklore and oral tradition), but he did crystallise a lot of those ideas into a cohesive, defined character for the first time. So why should we care about these stories? Well, partly because the character of Reynard continues to be relevant today. An illustration from a 13th century edition of Roman de Renart, showing a knightly Reynard stabbing Ysengrim- a bit more blunt than his usual style In Roman de Renart, Bruin the Bear has an ear ripped off and Tybalt the cat gets blinded in one eye while trying to catch Reynard. While Ysengrim is the most frequent target of Reynard’s tricks, other animals are featured too. The next tale in Ysengrimus has Reynard getting Ysengrim’s tail frozen into a river, where it is chopped off by an enraged woman. And while Ysengrim ends up taking the prize for himself (the only time Reynard is outwitted in all these tales), Reynard makes up for it in subsequent stories. Reynard then acquires the meat by finding a peasant carrying some, and pretending to be so exhausted that the peasant puts down the bacon to try and catch Reynard and take his pelt. Ysengrim initially wants to eat him, but the fox manages to convince him to let him go by offering to get a piece of bacon for them both to share. The first tale in Ysengrimus has Reynard captured by the wolf Ysengrim (or Isengrim). Most Reynard stories follow the classic trickster pattern: he is set up against an adversary, and overcomes them with misdirection and ingenuity. From there he made his way into French, German, and ultimately English, literature, but we will concentrate on these early tales for now. His first appearance in written literature was in Ghent in around 1150, in the mock-epic Latin story collection Ysengrimus, and later in the French poem Le Roman de Renart (the Tale of the Fox) from around 1170. ![]() Reynard – also called Reinaert, Renart, Reineke or Renartus – is an anthropomorphic fox and trickster figure who was hugely popular in medieval literature. So where did the idea of the cunning fox come from? Even when foxes live close to humans, such as in today’s cities, they are usually more reclusive than their Machiavellian reputation would sayĪnswer: from Reynard, the vulpine hero of the 12 th century. ![]() Which might seem a little strange to anyone who’s ever encountered a real life fox: while foxes are certainly intelligent, they are also frequently shy and skittish and have spent hundreds of years running in fear from human hunters, not executing elaborate plots against them. ![]() In our culture, foxes are usually depicted as sly, devious and cunning, from the Redwall novels to Blackadder’s “as cunning as a fox who’s just been appointed professor of cunning at Oxford university”. ![]() In this way, they will believe that you have sent them crucial information. Doss used pure will power to save those men that glorious day. His iron determination and unflagging courage resulted in at least 75 lives saved that day, May 5, 1945, his Sabbath.” (“Desmond Doss: The Real Story”). One lone soldier disobeyed orders and charged back into the fire fight to rescue as many of his men as he could, before he either collapsed or died trying. The rest lay wounded, scattered across enemy soil-abandoned and left for dead, if they weren't already. “ After the company had secured the top of the cliff, the Americans were stunned when suddenly enemy forces rushed them in a vicious counterattack.Soldiers rushed to climb back down the steep cliff.Less than one third of the men made it back down. To do so, he had been versatile in his tactics to move fast and quietly. After he had treated his fellow warriors, he still had yet to bring them to complete safety. They saw him as a liability and had not believed in his capabilities from the beginning. Doss never saw an enemy, he never understood the concept, he only saw each person injured in need of his help. He even helped save and protect injured Japanese. Those who had been unthankful, or had doubted his ability, he had too, done them well. As he rushed into battle, Doss had pinpointed out the injured soldiers and had ran to their aid. His exclusion to fear had enabled him to defend with great force and expel robust strength. Yet, despite all the odds, Desmond had looked into the eyes of fear and had shaken his hand. America and Japan were at each other's throats, and the power that both sides beheld was suffocating. From there, it had branched off to something more intense the beginning of World War II. Doss had enrolled in the military during the crisis of Pearl Harbor. Several times, while treating a wounded soldier, Desmond was so close to enemy lines, he could hear the whispering of Japanese voices,” (“Desmond Doss: The Real Story”). All this, while enemy bullets whizzed past and mortar shells exploded around him. “He repeatedly ran into the heat of battle to treat a fallen comrade and carry him back to safety. However, his courage had the power to save a multitude of people. He had never once considered his own safety, which many say is foolish. When he had offered his support, he had repeatedly done so with a target at his back. Desmond Doss’ altruistic and courageous ideals prove him to be a hero.ĭesmond Doss br. Desmond Doss ĭoss had conveyed his altruistic sense through his actions in saving others. Without fear, Doss had put others first and was prepared to sacrifice himself to protect the lives of others. There was never a time where he had not followed his golden rule, “.do to others what you would have them do to you.” (Matthew 7:12). With kindness and gentle courtesy, he treated those who had mistreated him,” (“Desmond Doss: The Real Story”). And if someone fainted from heat stroke, this medic was at his side, offering his own canteen. Despite their cruelty, Doss was always free of loathing, “Things began turning around when the men discovered that this quiet unassuming medic had a way to heal the blisters on their march-weary feet. Due to his opposition to violence and religious beliefs, he was victim to gruesome abuse from his associates and was even forced to see a psychologist to check his mental stability. ![]() When enrolled into the army as a conscientious objector, Desmond had believed that he would not need to be carrying a gun due to his status, yet to his surprise, he was immediately sent to an infantry rifle company. From that day onward, Desmond Doss refused to ever lay a hand on a weapon. As he would see the grim photo of Cain killing his brother Abel, young Doss would question how one could commit such a horrific act towards another. It depicted the biblical story of Cain and Abel. The Sixth Commandment always caught his eye: Thou shalt not kill. Despite the abuse, Doss had grown up in a very religious household and the Ten Commandments were a constant in his life. As a young child, he was subject to severe domestic abuse, which was believed to have been the root to his hatred of artillery. Desmond’s life had been a difficult one, to say the least. ![]() In 1942, Doss had enlisted into the United States Army and spent his time preparing to serve as an army combat medic. Desmond Doss, one particularly brave soldier, displayed his immense strength by single-handedly saving seventy-five wounded soldiers while under enemy fire. On the battlelines of Hacksaw Ridge, in Okinawa, Japan, soldiers were prepared to face the cold, noxious clasp of death. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's also worth noting there are some exceptions to the straightforward approach like "Last Springsteen" (which has a different order), "New Messiah" (which is a bit shorter), and "A Lullaby Sent to the Devils" (which is actually longer).Īmnother positive trait is that Namiki decided to have a quite varied selection of tracks, instead of referring to all of the classic themes from both series that have been arranged to death (with two mandatory exceptions, "Vampire Killer" and "Jungle Battle"). This is especially in the case of tracks from older games, such as "A Lullaby Sent to the Devil", "Contra Area 2 BGM", "Jungle Base" and others, so the album still remains quite fresh for veterans of the series. That said, quite a few of the original tracks actually benefit a lot from the upgrade. It would have been good to hear Namiki's personal take on the music and give the soundtracks an even more distinctive feel. The main problem with them is that quite a few of the tracks are just more of a translation/upgrade to the new sound module there's not much variation of the original music in regards to new sections and different passages. With stunning synth work, he manages to achieve that same Konami arcade sound from the early 90s, making for a quite fun and enjoyable listen. This could be a major hold back to some people, but don't just leave yet.Īs for the arrangements, I think Namiki did an impressive job arranging the tracks. Bodyįirst of all, an important fact one should know about this album is that, just like in Gradius ReBirth, it is comprised mostly of arrangements of several classic themes from both series (and unlike the Gradius ReBirth Original Soundtrack, the original source tracks have been omitted, most probably due to space limitations). How does this new release stand up? Let's find out. Once again, Manabu Namiki was put in charge of bringing more retro-styled music to these new releases. This time, though, it took a while before they decided to release a soundtrack album for the games, but eventually they compiled both on the album present here. Dracula Densetsu ReBirth & Contra ReBirth Original Soundtrack :: Review by Kevinĭracula Densetsu ReBirth & Contra ReBirth Original Soundtrackįollowing their previous Gradius ReBirth release, Konami revived both the Contra and Castlevania series for WiiWare throughout 2009, with certain success. ![]() People think of a hard drive as a digital device that magnetic bits are arranged in a tight pattern and get "flipped" on or off by the drive heads. However, there is a reason that governments mandate multiple passes. Practically speaking, the accepted answer is correct one pass is sufficient to make the data on a drive unrecoverable. The question being asked is purely academic, so this answer is also purely academic. This is an old question but I felt compelled to throw in my two cents given that I have forensic data recovery experience. TrueCrypt's documentation includes an excellent discussion of this problem, and ways to solve it. In the case of flash-based media, your best bet is to simply encrypt any and all sensitive data that goes onto it, using a strong password. Without going into the details of what the term means or the reasons behind it, it means that you really can't securely delete files on flash-based media unless you securely wipe the entire media, and even that can't always guarantee that the wear-leveling algorithms didn't leave behind un-wiped data that you couldn't write to. )Ĭaveat: Flash-based media employ a system called "wear leveling" to extend the life of the device. ![]() If this is the case, though, you should be asking your superior/handler what your agency's regulations are regarding secure deletion of sensitive data, not SU. On the other hand, if you are a secret government agent, well, one pass really isn't enough because you do have China after your data. So the answer to your question (How many passes are needed?) is: "One." The answer to your implied question (Should I override shred's default 3 passes?) is: "Nah." (Eraser defaults to only a single pass when deleting free space on a hard drive this, too, I let run at the default.) When I used shred (default number of passes: 3) I let it do its 3 passes when I use Eraser on Windows (default number of passes on a file: 35), I let it do its 35 passes. Thus, while the fallacy that you have to overwrite multiple times with complex patterns of passes is widespread enough that all "secure deletion" software defaults to multiple passes, there's really very little point to overriding those defaults. That said, modern disks are quite fast, and unless you're wiping the entirety of a hard drive multiple passes take so little time that there's really no reason not to do them. If, on the other hand, you're merely dealing with personal banking passwords and your secret pr0n stash, a single pass is plenty sufficient to render the data completely unrecoverable from any practical means. If you're dealing with government secrets (as the NSA is) then write-once probably isn't good enough, because China has no problem obtaining and using these devices, nor employing teams of hundreds of specialized experts to use them. All such devices are horrendously expensive, and even with the best equipment and most-skilled experts, it takes a monumental amount of time (think years for a single platter all hard disks have multiple platters) and has a very high failure rate. What is left behind requires electron microscopes and/or high-tech magnetometric (or whatever they're called) scanners. Modern magnetic media are quite efficient, and leave behind very little evidence of former bit positions. It's not about special problems of flash drives. It's not about different techniques to wipe it securely (magnetic power, melting, filling with sand and turning). It's not so much about the method (random numbers 0s, 0xFF and fancy patterns). It's not about old MFM/RLL-drives from the early 90ies.It's not about bad sectors, where data might slip through.Overwrite N times instead of the default (3)īut on the one hand I heard about an NSA suggestion to overwrite 27 times, and on the other hand professional data recovery firms could not recover data from a drive that was wiped just once. ![]() Linux/GNU shred says in the manual: -n, -iterations=N Not in the sense, that a forensic team of 20 experts with a budget of 100 million euro or dollars and 10 years of time to restore a couple of bytes from a known address with 80% accuracy, but few people with a few 1000 €/$ budget, who wouldn't spend more than two weeks on the job, and who don't know where on the drive they are searching.
